We hear so much these days from so many different sources about how wonderful we are in God’s eyes, about how much God wants to do for us to make us happy and successful in this life, one might think that we mere mortals are the center of God’s universe! I even heard recently that everything God does, he does just for us! That’s awesome! But is it true?
Your thoughts please.
Oh!!! Missa Kottah!!! I know I know! (My best ‘horseshack’ impression!)
Having listened and read from yours and Jason’s expositions for more than a year now AND from my own recent reading. I KNOW the view you just articulated is NOT biblical at all. It’s amazing to me how many people I bump into everyday take this view. It makes me laugh because I see how these people are taking what i like to call a ‘Salad Bar’ approach to their faith. They seem to see their Christian God as the maintainer of a salad bar. God puts out all these items and the ‘Christian’ walks through and takes what is palatable (iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cukes, cheese, full fat ranch dressing) to them and ‘leave behind’ that which they find yucky (spinach leaves, chick peas, bean sprouts, frise).
As I see it MOST Christians have a view of God that is very centered on what THEY like and what THEY see as acceptable. I am a non-believer and even I can’t find ANY basis for this view within the pages of the book they like to beat me over the head with.
They have indeed created a god in the image of how they would like him to be….instead of the one the Bible makes very clear.
It is my suspicion that these people infuriate you 1000x more than some one like me does.

Hi Robert!
The “Salad Bar” approach must be the healthier version of “Cafeteria Style” Christianity.
What, me get angry? Say it ain’t so!

That all depends on the type of salad bar now wouldn’t it?
I know some people who can go to a salad bar and consume 3000 calories in one plate.

God made fiber, too.
It sounds so simplistic, but the fall happened when Eve started thinking about herself to the exclusion of God.

God’s love is centered in himself. God loves himself most of all. We could say he is self-centered. When humans are self-centered, it is a bad thing. This is because only God is rightly self-centered. A theological term which expresses this is that God is all-sufficient. He has in himself everything he needs. And remember that God is a Trinity. When God loves himself, it is also true that Father loves the Son, and the Spirit, and the Spirit loves the Father and the Son, etc.
God does everything for his own glory. He created, he blesses, he regenerates, forgives, santifies, or judges humans all for his own glory. God’s interaction with his human creatures makes his own glorious attributes to be displayed, that is, to be more widely known and regarded.
Therefore, God doesn’t exist to bless us. He made us to bless himself, i. e. for his own glory. Only when we are glorifying him are we fulfilling our created purpose.
Are you living up to God’s purpose for creating you, that you bless him, please him, obey him, and seek to honor him with your life? For this is truly what it means to be human.

Riley,
You are absolutely right. God is the center of His existance, not us. That we are mightily blessed is a by-product:
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Rom 11:36
If I could read French, I would explore the site your names links to! This is a good time for people to get to know the real John Calvin!

Although admittedly my English page has less to say about John Calvin, who was a Frenchman.

Do I feel like an idiot or what! Recently I finished a 75 lesson course on the history and theology of Calvinism I found online at

Lower quality audio, but very well taught, I thought. I also sent you an email just to make contact that way also.
