What are You Reading for Christian Growth?

I’ve become convinced that one of Satan’s cleverest and most successful tricks is to get us reading all sorts of books to equip ourselves to serve God when scripture is itself sufficient for all things.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Tim 3:16-17 (NIV)

I base my conclusion on seeing a veritable plethora of ads on Facebook waning me to buy this or that book to learn how to be successful in this or that Christian endeavor.

I think that Satan is at work because he knows that the Spirit of God who lives in us is most effective in our sanctification, maturity, and usefulness to God’s service when our learning comes through Holy Writ.

I’m not saying that reading other good Christian books is fruitless, but I am pointing to the primary and best source of Godly knowledge and spiritual power for the tasks of the Christian life.

Presuppositional Apologetics’ Cartoon: Every Worldview is Circular

SLIMJIM's avatarThe Domain for Truth

I had a long week of ministry and I’m not able to stay up late tonight.

But here’s a brief post.

Here is a cartoon from Eddie of Calvinist Cartoons that makes a good point concerning Presuppositional Apologetics:

All worldview is ultimately circular. The issue isn’t whether it is circular; rather it is rather one’s worldview would be able to account for human experiences and reasoning.

President Trump and the Messiah

How many of us who profess Christ as Savior and defend President Trump as the duly elected President will defend the President’s action in public discourse, yet present a gospel of self-fulfillment rather than the true Gospel that Christ died because of OUR sin?

Something to think about this morning. . .

The Left’s Double Standard on Freedom of Religion: Muslim Singers and Christian Photographers

The interviewer should be put in prison for the murder of ‘liberal’ brain cells. I smelled smoke during tha last half.

Very insightful video.  I”m just going to put this out there and I think it speaks for itself:

The Alliance Defending Freedom did a good job with this video making the point of the double standard and inconsistencies.

What’s in YOUR Gospel?

image

I saw this cartoon in a recent Facebook post. The artist actually has a web site here where he posts cartoons that he draws for his home church’s Sunday bulletin and that he also offers to others to use. Kudos to the artist!

The cartoon presents several really good ‘gospel’ truths packed into a small picture:

  • We all have broken ‘stuff’ in our lives.
  • If not for Jesus buying us back (redeeming us) Satan owns us!
  • Jesus did & does literally ‘purchase’ men for God. (See Rev 5:9).
  • We are all ‘one of a kind classics’, with unique DNA and created in God’s image.
  • Jesus can and will fix all our broken parts!
  • Jesus DID come to seek and save the lost!

At the same time, I would like to offer a few personal comments and a serious suggestion.

First of all, I think the cartoon accurately describes exactly how most of us present the gospel. It just about always comes down to telling folks that Jesus came to fix all the ‘broken and missing parts’ of their lives and at some point asking “Whaddya say?”

When we’re asked “What do I gotta do?” we tell them to “Give your heart to Jesus”, “Just invite/accept Jesus into your heart,” or a variation thereof.

But here’s the thing. Our main problem, out of which all others erupt, is SIN. We have been broken since the Fall of Adam and thus, slaves of ‘sin’, not just victims with broken bits here and there.

Am I saying we shouldn’t talk about what’s ‘broken’ in people’s lives? Of course not! But in our conversation about all the broken stuff we need to take the discussion to the real problem, do a little ‘root cause analysis’, if you will. Then when we get to the ‘main thing’, and not until then, we can offer God’s solution – forgiveness through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, with which he ‘purchased men for God’. Then we can also talk about the need to respond to that offer – the “Whaddya say?” question.

In short, our gospel message needs to contain, somewhere in the conversation, the gospel proclamation of Scripture – the one from which the Apostle Paul never varied:

“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received. . .For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. . .” (1 Cor 15:1-4)

And so I ask you (and myself) again. . .

The Servetus Problem – Tim Challies

The Servetus Problem – Tim Challies

This is an excellent article concerning the issue of John Calvin and Michael Servetus. If  you think John Calvin ‘murdered’ Servetus you REALLY need to read this. If you come away still believing Calvin guilty of murder, you have a serious mental health issue technically termed “mindrustedshutitis”.
